AbstractThis paper presents outcomes regarding liquid nitrogen consumption reduction in a thermal vacuum chamber, with the motivation of lessening operational costs during space equipment testing. The article briefly outlines the optimal control application to thermal and cryogenic-related control systems based on a gas cycle, and assesses liquid nitrogen savings opportunities for a chamber including six shrouds with independent temperature requirements. In this case study, optimization of temperature transition profiles and a proposed modification in the control setup yielded potential savings from 14.1% to 20.4% in the examined experimental transitions.
